The U.S. Coast Guard saved a marine animal during a major drug seizure.
The crew rescued a large sea turtle who was caught in numerous bales of contraband. This happened during a 68-day drug patrol in the eastern pacific.
Officials said nearly seven tons of cocaine and 14 pounds of marijuana were found. The cocaine was valued at $53 million. In total, $153 million in drugs were seized from international waters. Two-dozen alleged smugglers were taken into custody.
After carefully cutting twisted lines, the turtle was successfully freed. The boat crew recovered more than 75-feet of line to prevent further entanglements of sea life.
It’s all part of operation Martillo, an international operation that includes 18 countries.
