Salinas, Calif. - Shawn Bakker has been tapped to join the Salinas Planning Commission for District 5. Bakker owns Bakker Construction and was the vision behind Tatum's Garden.
Appointed by city council member Kimbley Craig-District 5, Bakker will be authorized to promote and ensure the comprehensive planning of the City of Salinas.
"I am honored to be appointed to the Salinas Planning Commission and hope to serve in a capacity that continues to develop our community and city. The City of Salinas has done so much to support Tatum's Garden and Bakker Construction and this is the least I can do to give back to a community that has given us so much," says Bakker.
Bakker, a resident of Salinas, is familiar with all aspects of residential and commercial projects through design permitting and construction and serving as the liaison between clients and the Planning and Building departments of cities in the Tri-County area.
Shawn and his wife Amanda were recently honored with the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Public Service for their vision and creation of Tatum's Garden. Bakker is a past Regional Entrepreneurial Success Award Winner and Small Business Entrepreneur of the Year recipient.
Craig says, "I'm incredibly thrilled that Shawn has agreed to be the Planning Commissioner for District 5. It's been a priority for me to hand-select key residents that are committed to bettering Salinas for these leadership positions---and Shawn and his family are shining examples of that commitment. His skill and expertise in the construction industry will be a huge asset to the Commission."
The Planning Commission approves applications for Conditional use Permits which do not meet the criteria for consideration by the Housing & Community Development Director.
