MONTEREY, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement on two Central Coast highways. The Superbike World Championship begins today at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, which is why the additional officers will focus on motorcycle safety beginning Friday.
CHP will deploy motorcycle safety enforcement operations on SR 68 and SR 1 in an effort to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents in Monterey County. The extra patrols are paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
"We will be focusing in on unsafe lane changes, primary collision factors, and speeding," said Chp Officer Michael Orta.
In 2016 there were 69 injury collisions and 3 fatal collisions involving motorcycles in the Monterey area.
