SEASIDE, Calif. - Millions of viewers across the country will get the chance to watch a Central Coast sports team make its TV debut this weekend. In fact it's a first for the university, so there's a lot of excitement around all the attention.
CBS Sports Network is televising the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Basketball game, starting Saturday at 11 a.m. We went on campus Friday night to see if they're ready to step into the limelight when it comes to the world of college sports.
The campus newspaper, The Otter Realm, put together a story headlined Otters on National TV. But what's playing an even bigger role is social media. Saturday's game is the NCAA Division 2 social media game of the year. CSUMB Athletics Director Kirby Garry said that's possibly one of the reasons why CSUMB was picked for TV - , for its presence on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites.
"Its a great way to generate interest and actually get that peer to peer influence. People want to have their photo show up on Tagboard," Garry said.
The CSUMB Athletics Department is pulling out all the stops for CBS Sports, as it prepares to air the game.
"Our men played a couple of years ago at Humboldt on CBS Sports. But this is the first TV event on our campus here at Monterey Bay," Garry said.
The network airs eight Division 2 games every year and this time the Otters will get to play for millions of viewers.
"I think its great exposure for our university and for our Athletics Department obviously. It's basically a two-hour commercial on a nationally televised audience," Garry said.
With only one week left of this year's regular season, it's taken a lot of help from other departments on campus as well.
Garry said they'll have a longer halftime, more promotions and giveaways for fans -- anything to fill the seats and draw a big crowd.
"They'll actually get here tonight and start preparations at 3 a.m. in the morning to get the cameras on. We built a couple of platforms on the bleachers that we don't normally have," Garry said.
The first 500 people to show up to Saturday's game will get a free T-shirt and some bigger prizes will be given away at halftime.
