SALINAS, Calif. - An East Salinas neighborhood was packed with at least a dozen police officers Sunday afternoon after a mentally ill man locked himself in a home on Eucalyptus Dr. and refused to come out, police said.
According to police, the 31-year old man got into an argument with other people inside of the home and said that if they called police he would commit suicide by cop.
"So not wanting to force that situation we came here and tried to call him outside to us so we could talk to him, provide him services and get him help at the hospital," said Sgt Jim Godwin, with Salinas Police. "He didn't come out so instead of forcing the situation we chose to walk away."
Police told KION that the man was wanted for very minor crimes so it was in the best interest of their officers and the public to walk away from the situation and to try to comfort the man at a different time.
