SALINAS, Calif. - The United Way of Santa Cruz County and the United Way of Monterey County are kicking off the annual "Stuff the Bus" project to collect backpacks and school supplies to help low-income and homeless children throughout the county.
Supplies are distributed through the Offices of Education in each county.
Last year, Stuff The Bus collected over 600 backpacks in Santa Cruz County filled with school supplies -- this year, the goal is to collect 1,000 filled backpacks.
In Santa Cruz County, donations can be dropped off at a number of locations including Bank of America, Bay Federal Credit Union, Santa Cruz County Bank and Wells Fargo Bank.
Filled backpacks can be sponsored for $25 and are available at all Palace Art & Office Supply locations or online at unitedwaysc.org. The school supply drive is July 1 – 31.
Volunteers will gather at the Palace Art parking lot in Capitola on Aug. 2 to fill the backpacks and stuff a school bus with donated supplies.
