MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. - UPDATE 8/16/16 12:00 AM: Highway 1 is now open to traffic in the Big Sur area.
The highway closed early Monday morning because of large trees threatening power lines and telephone cables near the highway.
Crews worked throughout the day and evening to lower lines, cut down trees and re-string lines.
UPDATE 8/15/16 3:00 PM: Highway 1 in Big Sur will remain closed until 12AM Tuesday.
The Unified Command of the Soberanes Fire says more time is needed to remove hazardous trees, a task that is becoming increasingly complex. Crews also need to restring powerlines and telephone lines along the highway.
Highway 1 is closed between the Ripplewood Cafe at 47047 Hwy 1 to the North Coast Ridge Road.
UPDATE 8/15/16 12:31 PM: The closure along Highway 1 in Big Sur was reduced Monday morning at about 11:00 a.m., according to Cal Fire. The road closure was moved from Point Sur Lighthouse to The Ripplewood Cafe at 47047 Highway 1.
Cal Fire said both lanes are closed about three and a half miles to North Coast Ridge Rd.
PREVIOUS STORY: Cal Fire officials say Highway 1 is closed once again, due to a hazardous tree.
The closure could remain in effect until 5:00 p.m. Monday evening.
Highway 1 will be closed to all traffic in both directions, from Point Sur Lighthouse to North Coast Ridge Road.
Officials say the roadway will re-open as soon as the threat to firefighter and public safety has been mitigated.
