Grocery delivery app launching on Central Coast Thursday

SALINAS, Calif. - Instacart began in the Bay Area around five years ago, and on Thursday it will be launching in the Monterey, Salinas and Santa Cruz markets.

"Instacart is an online grocery delivery service where we partner with different stores. We hire different shoppers and have them go to the store for you and have them deliver in as little as one hour," said Instacart Operations Manager, Joe Benz.

More than 100 people from the area have been hired to do the shopping. So, what stores can you shop from on the app?

"If you want to come to Smart and Final, Safeway, Costco. Also there's alcohol delivery with Bevmo. Our shoppers, who are very well trained, will go in and do it as fast as possible and then, hopefully bring it to you with exactly what you want," said Benz.

Here's how it works: You download the Instacart app and then, using your zip code, you select a store you want to shop from.

"They're seeing exactly what's in the store at that exact time," said Benz.

Once you've placed your order, a trained shopper will then go out and get everything you wanted, scanning each one to ensure they have the correct item. But like all shopping, it's going to cost you...

It's $5.99 flat rate. We do have an Instacart express model, where it's $1.49 for the year, and also the option for $14.99 for the monthly basis and that gets you the free delivery.

Instacart is offering a special promo code for the launch. Enter 'HelloSalinas" or "HelloSantaCruz" and you'll save $20 off $35 or more
