Highway 1 reopens after Soberanes Fire firing operation

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. - Highway 1 has reopened after firing operations in the Big Sur area of the Soberanes Fire required the road to close at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in both directions between Point Sur Lighthouse and North Coast Ridge Road, Cal Fire said.

Highway 1 was closed for 6 hours.

According to Cal Fire, the firing operations were extremely successful.The shutdown allowed firefighters to aggressively fight the fire on perimeter, protecting the Big Sur and surrounding communities, Cal Fire said.

ORIGINAL STORY: Highway 1 from Point Sur Lighthouse to North Coast Ridge Road will be closed on Sunday, August 14, 2016 starting at 2 p.m. as firefighters do firing operations in Big Sur. The closure will stay in effect for up to 24 hours.

The closure will be re-evaluated during the 24-hour period based on fire conditions, the threat to firefighters and public safety.
