Man arrested, suspected of DUI in deadly Salinas car crash

SALINAS, Calif. - The Salinas Police Department is investigating a fatal car crash that left a 78-year-old woman dead.

Police say the woman had pulled onto East Laurel Drive from St. Edwards when her car was broadsided.

"The impact of the collision was severe enough to cause the woman's death," according to the Salinas Police Department.

Officers say Jose Luis Aguilar, 31, is suspected of being under the influence of marijuana and/or methamphetamine.

Field sobriety tests were done at the hospital in addition to a blood test, according to police.

Aguilar was arrested and booked into Monterey County Jail for vehicular manslaughter and DUI causing death, police report. Aguilar reportedly received minor injuries.

Police said witnesses at the scene indicated Aguilar was driving, "extremely fast" and that both vehicles had extensive damage.
