Monterey County Sheriff's recover thousands of dollars worth of fake money

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. - According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, Deputies recovered 288 counterfeit twenty dollar bills.

Law enforcement was tipped off by a local citizen about a backpack secluded in the bushes just off a trail near Toro Park.

The sheriff's office said, had the fake money not been recovered several local businesses could have potentially been defrauded out of $5,760.

A suspect has not been connected to the counterfeit money. Authorities are working with the U.S. Secret Service to assist Monterey County Sheriffs with figuring out who made the counterfeit bills.
