SALINAS, Calif. - Every kindergarten student in Salinas will soon have a library card of their very own. The Salinas Public Library announced Monday it will distribute the cards, which feature an image of Peanuts character Snoopy, to over 2,800 kindergartners. Students can then exchange the temporary library cards for permanent cards at any Salinas library branch.
The program is part of Library Card Sign-up Month, which is organized annually by the American Library Association.
Library staff will deliver the temporary cards to kindergarten students in the city's three elementary school districts and several private schools.
The library is also hosting six "Family Date Night" events in September and October. The invitation-only events for kindergartners and their families will feature a special story time and library tours to acquaint parents with services offered by the libraries.
In addition to the kindergarten program, there will be a sign-up event for all ages at Cesar Chavez Library on September 17 from 12-4 p.m..
Library Card Sign-up Month seeks to instill a love of learning and increase literacy rates throughout the city. The library is offering incentive programs to teachers and parents to encourage students to activate their cards.
