46 DUI arrests made in San Benito, Monterey counties over July 4 weekend

HOLLISTER, Calif. - Forty-six arrests were made for driving under the influence in Monterey and San Benito counties during the July 4th holiday weekend.

California Highway Patrol officers from three area command centers made 70 percent of the arrests during an enforcement period that started Thursday, July 3 and ended Sunday night.

Law enforcement officer from the 20 jurisdictions in both counties brought in 46 DUI arrests, said Salinas police traffic Sgt. Gerry Ross, coordinator of Avoid the 20, the police crackdown on drunk and drugged drivers.

That was five fewer DUI arrests than the same time period last year but 16 more than were arrested over the Memorial Day holiday.

Salinas police arrested one driver with five previous DUI convictions who they cited for driving without a license at a sobriety checkpoint Thursday night.

One of the arrests by CHP officer from the King City squad was of a man whose DUI arrest marked his fourth in 10 years - that elevates it to a felony.
