MARINA, Calif. - A fire badly burned an abandoned building in Marina on the former Fort Ord Wednesday night.
This is the second fire in less than three months in the area.
Another vacant building was heavily damaged in June and fire crews said several fire hydrants had been vandalized and had to be turned off, making their job difficult.
The Marina Fire Department responded to the area south of Patton Parkway on Hayes Circle near 4th Street just after 8 p.m. Wednesday. They stayed on scene late into the night mopping up, after the fire nearly destroyed the structure. The building, within the Cypress Knolls Project area of Marina, is proposed to be demolished.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, but the area is frequented by transients and teens. Arson cannot be ruled out.
The challenge for firefighters in this area is that there is no water due to damaged and vandalized infrastructure.
Water had to be trucked in to put the fire out. A fire engine and water tender from the Presidio of Monterey Fire Department and an additional water tender from North Monterey County responded to assist the Marina engine.
