CARMEL, Calif. - An investigation is underway to unlock clues about a dead body found buried in Carmel across the street from The Crossroads Carmel.
The body was discovered in a vacant lot on Rio Road by a construction worker while digging up dirt.
Detectives were on the scene taking photos, measurements and looking for anything that would give them information about the body and how and why it ended up there.
Sheriff's said at this time not much solid information is known, other than that the body was buried in dirt, which they say could seem suspicious.
"In this case the only alternative theory we could com up with thinking is possibly a homeless person had maybe dug an area to sleep in and then it collapsed," said Matt Luther with the Monterey County Sheriff's Investigations Unit. "At that point we're not sure, so we're still trying to put it all back together."
The body was taken to the coroners office for an autopsy to determine the identity and cause of death. It's not know whether the person was male or female.
Investigators say if you have any information or have a loved one who went missing and you have not been able to find them to contact the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
