Former Monterey High cheerleading coach sentenced on sex charges

SALINAS, Calif. - A former Monterey High School volunteer cheerleading coach has been placed on five years of probation for having sex with a minor, among other charges,

Gregory Uvalles, 23, of Freedom pleaded no contest in April to two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, two counts of sending harmful matter to minors, contact with a minor for sexual purposes, and possession of metal knuckles.

Uvalles has no prior criminal record, which the court noted in finding him eligible for probation. He was given what's called a suspended sentence of seven years in state prison, which means that if he violates the terms of his probation, then he have to serve the seven-year prison term.

Authorities were tipped off after a parent of one of the victim's friends learned that Uvalles was sending inappropriate sexual images to a minor. That led police to identify several other victims who were currently or previously under his supervision.

Uvalles will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
