Fresno man shot dead in Castroville on Labor Day

CASTROVILLE, Calif. - UPDATE 9/7/2016 2:40 PM: The family of three men shot on Labor Day in Castroville are providing corrected age and family information. Jose Luis Cortez, who died from his wounds, was 39 years old, not 26. In addition, Manuel Cortez is Jose's brother, and Anthony Purcell is his brother in law. The family said Jose Luis Cortez died protecting his nephew from the shooters.

UPDATE 9/6/2016 4:11 PM: The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has identified the victims in Monday's deadly shooting in Castroville.

Investigators said Jose Luis Cortez, 26, of Fresno, died at the scene. Two additional victims, Manuel Salvador Cortez and Anthony Purcell, were shot and taken to the hospital, according to the sheriff's office.

UPDATE 9/5/16 1:00 PM: A Sheriff's Department spokesperson tells KION that all three victims are male and were washing a car at the time of the shooting. The suspects may have approached on foot.

ORIGINAL STORY: Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies report Monday that three people have been shot -- one fatally -- in Castroville. The incident happened in the 11000 block of Speegle Street. Up to seven shots were fired.

Deputies have issued a B.O.L (Be On the Lookout) for a light blue Honda Accord or Prelude.
