Marina man convicted twice in one year

MARINA, Calif. - A Marina man was convicted twice for threatening to kill his wife.

The second time he made the threat was in the courtroom, while being handed his sentence for strangling her.

A jury found Michael Fortner guilty of that crime after a separate jury in January said he was guilty of strangling his wife and leaving her blind in her left eye in November.

Fortner was sentenced to nine years in state prison in March. During that sentencing, Fortner turned to his victim, who was in the courtroom, and threatened to kill her.

The act led to the second jury trial and second conviction in June.

Fortner faces up to 16 more months on top of his 9 year sentence at his second sentencing on July 23, 2014.
