Power outage in the Monterey area mostly restored

PG&E says "equipment failure" is the cause

MONTEREY, Calif. - More than 3,000 people were without power in the Monterey area Saturday, according to Pacific Gas & Electric.

The outage impacted Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row and downtown Monterey.

As of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, most of the customers had been restored according to PG&E. A few spotty outages may remain, Traffic signals seem to be up and running now as well.

City of Monterey says a transformer at Del Monte and Sloat has apparently failed. PG&E won't confirm that, just saying 'equipment failure' occurred. The outage was widespread in Monterey, with traffic lights out on Lighthouse and Fremont and Del Monte and in downtown at the time.

Spokespersons for the Sardine Factory on Wave Street and Brittania Arms on Alvarado Street say the hotels and restaurants were back up with power within 20 minutes in some cases.

Monterey police, fire and public works were out during this outage to monitor the situation and direct traffic.

McGrath says the signal lights on Lighthouse Avenue were out for awhile and on this busy holiday weekend that created problems.
