Salinas police investigating attempted armed robbery at taqueria

Police believe same suspect also robbed North Sanborn Road store

SALINAS, Calif. - Salinas police are investigating an attempted armed robbery that occurred at a taqueria just before noon Monday.

Police said a suspect entered the El Guerro Taqueria on Williams Road with a black handgun, grabbed a female clerk by the arm and pointed the gun to her head, demanding money.

A second clerk yelled and ran to the office, locking herself in. The scream distracted the suspect momentarily, giving the clerk a chance to break free and run to a freezer, where she shut herself in.

The suspect, described as a Hispanic male approximately 28 to 30 years in age, fled without any money. He was described as being about 5-foot-7 and of slight build, with a mustache, wearing sunglasses, a gray hoodie and jeans. He spoke Spanish.

About a half-hour later, a suspect with the same physical description entered the Los Alazanez Western Store on North Sanborn Road armed with a handgun. He tried to force the 76-year-old female clerk to open the register, but she wouldn't. The suspect pulled a gold ring off her finger, stole three pairs of cowboy boots and then took off.
