Victim dies in Salinas shooting

Wednesday's homicide is the city's 21st killing in 2016

SALINAS, Calif. - UPDATE 8/3/16 5:30 PM: Police say a young man shot Wednesday afternoon on C Street in Salinas has died. The victim is a 17-year-old male, whose name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

This is the 21st homicide in the city this year and the third in the last four days.

Police say the victim was initially able to speak to officers but his condition quickly deteriorated. Medical personnel offered aid and transported him to Natividad Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to investigators, the victim and another friend were outside a residence talking when they were approached by two suspects who pulled handguns and fired several rounds. The victim was hit several times. No one else was injured in the shooting.

The suspects fled onto Josephine Street and escaped in a silver or white 4-door compact sedan. The suspects were described as two Hispanic male adults in their early 20's, wearing dark clothing.

UPDATE 8/3/16 3:20 PM: The Salinas Police Department reports a man in his late teens to early 20s was shot multiple times Wednesday afternoon in the 1100 block of C Street in Salinas.

Witnesses reported the shooting just before 1 p.m. and told police they saw a dark colored sedan in the area at the time of the shooting. Officers found multiple shell casings on the street that appear to be from a handgun.

The victim was taken to Natividad Trauma Center in serious condition.
