Phosphorus flare found near Asilomar Beach

PACIFIC GROVE - UPDATE: Officials say the flare has been detonated and will now be safely disposed.

Pacific Grove Officers responded to a report of a suspicious cannister found near Asilomar Beach in the 1400 block of Sunset Drive.

The device has been determined to be a phosphorus flare, typically used by the military for water search and rescue operations as well as drills.

Per protocol, the area is secured and the U.S. Airforce EOD bomb squad has been called to the scene where the device will be safely detonated. You may hear the explosion, but officials say it is nothing to be alarmed about.
