SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - All of Cowell Beach has been posted this week with an advisory warning people to avoid bodily contact with the water due to elevated bacteria levels.
Santa Cruz County health officials say this extends to the entire beach, from the wharf extending west past the Dream Inn to the cliffs.
Advisory signs have been placed at Cowell Beach entry points. The area will continue to be monitored and postings remain in effect until bacteria levels recede to within safe body contact standards.
Cowell Beach was recently selected by a nonprofit environmental organization as one of California's top "beach bummers" due to consistent problems with bacteria levels.
All other beaches tested this week met safe body contact standards.
