WATSONVILLE, Calif. - A fire in Watsonville caused major damage to a Ninth Street home Monday and displaced nine residents, authorities said.
The fire started around 12:45 p.m. and police sent out an alert asking people to avoid the area while crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
Family members said only two people were home when the fire broke out. One woman climbed out of a window onto the roof and her uncle set up a ladder for her to climb down.
Watsonville fire crews were assisted by members of the North Monterey County, Pajaro Dunes and Aptos/La Selva fire departments.
They contained the fire in about 20 minutes; no other structures were damaged.
