National Prescription Drug Takeback Day is Saturday

SALINAS, Calif. - Saturday is the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Drug Takeback Day, an annual program aimed at preventing prescription drug abuse and theft by ridding homes of unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs.

Pills are being collected for disposal throughout the region. The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, however - only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last October, Americans turned in more than  647,000 pounds of prescription drugs at over 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners.

Collection sites accepting drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday:

Santa Cruz County

  • Scotts Valley Police Department, 1 Civic Center Drive, Scotts Valley.
  • Capitola Police at 422 Capitola Ave.
  • Watsonville PD, 215 Union St. Watsonville Ca. 95076

Monterey County

  • Bank of America parking lot, Highway 1 and Rio Road, Carmel.
  • Starbucks, 17539 Vierra Canyon Road, Prunedale.
  • Gonzales Police Department, lobby, 109 Fourth St., Gonzales.
  • Pine Canyon Fire Station, 51251 Pine Canyon Road, King City.
  • Oldemeyer Center, 986 Hilby Ave., Seaside.

Santa Clara County

  • Gilroy Police Department, main lobby, 7301 Hanna St., Gilroy.
