Phone Scam Aimed at Duping Victims into Donating to Local Fire Charity

Callers use fake numbers with local area codes

APTOS, Calif. - Several people living in Santa Cruz County say callers claiming to be associated with the Aptos/La Selva Fire District are trying to collect money for what they call the "Burn Foundation Charity".

In some cases, the callers say they're with "your local fire departments".

The scammers urge victims to donate money with a credit card over the phone, which gives them access to the victims' personal information.

The calls appear to come from an 831 area code, though in reality they came from a series of disposable cell phones that disconnect shortly after the call connects.

The District said it wants to be clear it will never solicit donations over the phone.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff is aware of the scam.

If you receive such a call, call your local law enforcement immediately and never, under any circumstances, give out credit card or bank information over the phone.
