Stolen motorcycle involved in Santa Cruz Police chase

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Santa Cruz Police Officers recovered a stolen motorcycle after a chase through the city.

The pursuit began Monday night when Santa Cruz PD attempted to pull over a motorcyclist near Front and Laurel Street after an officer noticed the bike did not have a rear license plate.

The driver refused to pull over and instead a police pursuit began around 9 p.m. The motorcyclist, 26-year-old Steven Duran rode up onto the west levee at Riverside Avenue.

"The motorcycle sped along the levee and back across all lanes of San Lorenzo Blvd. just east of Jessie Street," said SCPD spokesperson Joyce Blaschke.

Duran attempted to drive up another path leading up to Oceanview Park, that's where police said he lost his balance and fell and dropped the bike.

Chief Andrew Mills took to Twitter Tuesday announcing Durans arrest.

"The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, Once removed, SCPD recognized him from multiple previous contacts," said police.

Santa Cruz Police determined the motorcycle was stolen out of Scotts Valley.

Duran was booked for reckless driving and evading an officer, possessing a stolen vehicle, probation violation and an outstanding felony warrant.
