Salinas police investigate 27th homicide of the year

SALINAS, Calif. - UPDATE 9/5/2016 7:42 AM: The victim has been identified as Michael Herrera. 20-year-old Herrera was a resident of Salinas and was the 27th homicide victim of the year.

UPDATE 8/30/2016 5:50 AM: A man is dead after being shot near Bridge and East Lake Streets in the Chinatown neighborhood. According to The Salinas Police Department, the call came in shortly before 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

After searching near Soledad Street, police discovered the body in the area of E. Lake and Bridge Street. According to Salinas Police the 20-year-old man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on scene.

Police believe the shooting may have occurred at least 15 minutes prior to the 911 call. At this time it's unknown why he was targeted.

Chinatown is no stranger to violence. Last Monday, a 27-year-old man was shot and killed just down the street from this murder.  There have been three homicides and three attempted murders in the City of Salinas since Friday.

This marks the 27th homicide of 2016.
