WATSONVILLE, Calif. - A 19-year-old man was killed in a car accident on Highway 152 Wednesday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, around 7:27 p.m. the teen was speeding in a 1998 Toyota Avalon on Highway 152 west of Delaney Avenue when it crossed over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic. The Toyota sideswiped a 2017 Volvo. The Toyota continued out of control and struck a dirt embankment, went airborne and struck a utility pole.
The driver of the Toyota died at the scene. The 20-year-old female passenger was taken to Natividad Medical Center for major injuries. Both the driver and passenger were from Watsonville.
The eastbound and westbound traffic lanes of Highway 152 were closed for more than three hours during the investigation and to clear downed powerlines from the road.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. It has not been determined whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
