MONTEREY, Calif. - UPDATE: The names have been chosen for the Monterey Bay Aquarium's penguin chicks.

Monty and Poppy were the winning names. 14,000+ people voted. Monty and Poppy will be back in the Penguin exhibit after they've completed their swim-training.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium needs your help naming two penguin chicks.

The aquarium is currently hosting a poll where people can choose their favorite name for each from a list. You can vote by clicking here.

The chicks are African penguins, one male and one female. The male hatched on January 19th, 2018 and is being raised by Pringle and Messina. The female also hatched on January 19th and is being raised by Walvis and Boulders.

The chicks are currently behind the scenes for their safety. (When they become mobile, young birds can’t be left on exhibit because they could accidentally drown or be injured by an adult penguin.)

In a few months they’ll return to the penguin colony in Splash Zone. These are the 9th and 10th chicks to hatch at the aquarium.

The African penguin is featured in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ new SAFE program: Saving Animals from Extinction. AZA SAFE is a collaborative campaign among more than 230 accredited members of AZA to combine resources and expertise to save animals from extinction.
